Those boundaries are increasingly blurring.

Biologicals, specialty nutrition, precision application, data and novel modes of action are becoming increasingly integrated with traditional crop protection chemistry. At the same time, grower economics, regulatory pressures and the demand for demonstrable return on investment (“ROI”) are reshaping how companies compete and invest.

The result is an industry entering a new phase in which leadership will increasingly depend on combining differentiated products and technology with proven performance, strong distribution and measurable value at the farm level.

The future of crop inputs is increasingly biology plus chemistry, rather than biology versus chemistry.

Biologicals Are Becoming Part of the Mainstream Toolkit

Biological crop inputs have spent years moving from a niche category toward mainstream agriculture. That transition is accelerating. Global agricultural biologicals sales were estimated at approximately $17 billion in 2025, while the U.S. agricultural biologicals market was estimated at more than $3.5 billion.¹ CropLife’s 2025 CropLife 100 survey found that 56% of leading U.S. agricultural retailers reported biological-product sales growth during the 2025 season.²

The supplier landscape is also changing. Corteva, BASF and Bayer are among the most prevalent biological suppliers to U.S. agricultural retailers.³ Biologicals, which historically emerged as a disruptive alternative outside traditional crop protection, are increasingly part of the portfolios of its largest participants.

Yet adoption ultimately depends on performance.

Growers purchase outcomes, not technology. New products must increase yield, improve nutrient efficiency, manage resistance, mitigate stress or otherwise deliver an attractive economic return. That hurdle remains particularly important for biologicals. CropLife’s 2026 Biologicals Survey found that 39% of respondents identified trust as the largest barrier to broader adoption.³ Industry coverage of the same survey also reported that 98% of retailers said biologicals are typically used to supplement conventional products rather than replace them.⁴

That points toward where the market is heading: biology and chemistry working together to deliver better outcomes.

Chemistry + Biology + Technology

Traditional chemistry will remain essential to global agricultural productivity. Herbicides, fungicides and insecticides protect yield at enormous scale, and biological alternatives have not replicated conventional performance across many applications.

What is changing is the definition of a crop-input platform.

Companies are increasingly combining conventional chemistry with biologicals, specialty nutrition, seed treatments, precision application, digital agronomy and emerging technologies such as RNAi and peptides.

Technology is simultaneously changing how those products are developed and deployed. AI can accelerate discovery and agronomic decision-making. Precision application can reduce input intensity. Data can improve decisions around which product should be applied, where, when and at what rate.

Increasingly, value will reside not simply in the product, but in the system surrounding its use:

Chemistry + Biology + Technology + Distribution → Grower ROI

This convergence also reinforces the value of distribution. Agriculture remains a relationship-driven industry. Growers rely heavily on retailers, agronomists and trusted suppliers when evaluating new products.

For emerging companies, access to those relationships can accelerate commercialization. For established input companies, differentiated technologies can add innovation to existing channels without recreating years of R&D internally. Those complementary needs create a natural foundation for M&A.

M&A Will Help Build the Next Generation of Crop-Input Platforms

Few companies possess all of these capabilities internally. As a result, M&A should remain an important tool for assembling them.

Large crop-input companies can acquire innovation, enter attractive categories and fill portfolio gaps. Middle-market companies can expand their product offerings, geographies and relevance to distributors and growers. Private equity can build platforms across fragmented specialty categories where founder-owned businesses possess differentiated products and customer relationships but may lack the infrastructure or capital to scale.

This reflects a broader shift across agriculture: M&A is increasingly about acquiring capabilities rather than simply adding scale.

Livingstone believes several areas should remain particularly active:

Biological crop protection and biostimulants

Specialty plant nutrition

Novel crop-protection technologies and modes of action

Precision and application technologies

Distribution and commercialization platforms

The rationale will vary by transaction, but the objective is increasingly similar: assemble differentiated capabilities faster than they can be built organically.

Differentiation Will Matter More for Valuation

An attractive market does not make every company within it an attractive business.

As biologicals and other emerging crop-input categories mature, buyers and investors are becoming more discerning. Companies that demonstrate repeatable efficacy, proprietary technology or intellectual property, recurring grower adoption, attractive margins, strong distribution and scalable, profitable growth should generate greater strategic interest.

Companies with undifferentiated products, inconsistent performance or limited barriers to entry will face greater scrutiny.

Across agriculture, premium valuations are increasingly associated with differentiated capabilities, technology, recurring demand and integrated platforms rather than commodity exposure alone. For biologicals in particular, simply participating in a high-growth category will not be enough.

Proof will matter.

Looking Ahead

Crop inputs remain one of the most strategically important areas of global agriculture. The need for greater productivity continues alongside challenges from resistance, regulation, input costs and climate volatility.

Chemistry will remain essential. Biologicals will continue gaining adoption. Specialty nutrition will become more sophisticated. Technology and data will improve how products are developed, selected and applied.

For strategic buyers, investors and founder-owned businesses, the convergence of these capabilities should create a compelling period of opportunity.

The next phase of crop inputs will not be defined by chemistry, biology or technology in isolation. It will be defined by their integration — supported by strong distribution and demonstrated through measurable grower ROI.

Livingstone and its Food & Agriculture Practice

Livingstone is a global mid-market M&A and debt advisory firm with more than 140 professionals across North America, Europe and Asia.
